WPLJ is a radio station in midtown Manhattan - its transmitter sits atop the Empire State Building. The station, operating since 1948, changed its call letters to WPLJ in 1971, paying homage to a tune on the Mothers of Invention record, "Burnt Weeny Sandwich". The song's title, "WPLJ" (a 50's pop cover), stands for "White Port and Lemon Juice". For most of the 70's, the station - featuring album tracks, was New York's most listened-to FM rock station
