You might not like it, but it's a spectacularly vibrant feeling when you're getting torn to pieces and emotionally shit on by another person. When they have such incredible gall to roll you like that, with minimal care for what they're going to leave behind when it's all said and done, it's an immeasurable honor. Sure, it's a catastrophe and you'd claim that you didn't deserve what you got, but it makes for some hot times, for some big boy gulps of LIFE. Toronto band PUP is of that age of male where catastrophes happen so often that they give you whiplash. You're constantly battered with the next great insult. The heart and the head see red daily and loving anyone is as good as standing in quicksand. There's no reason not to just drink a lot for the diversion. There's no reason not to just ball up your hands and box the air, swinging away trying to hit something. There's no reason not to just accept it all as what you get. These songs are spectacular flourishes of what it feels like to take the piss out of a bad hand and reshuffle, with a big grin on their faces and sweat dripping down onto the cards.
