Liner Notes

Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs are so many things: party rock, punk, classic rock, and—Elvis Costello?? Coffey and co. are a powerhouse of sound that expand the potential of hard rock music. They make punk music smarter and smart music louder. This band is defined by their catchy and well-written songs that are at the same time abrasive and full of energy. The constant barrage of distorted guitars and gang vocals never wears itself out; each song finds a way to be refreshing and original. You might be inclined to think rock music like this wavers on just one wavelength, but as I said before, Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs are always branching and reaching into different toolboxes for ideas. There are places where country meets metal, where classic southern rock meets all your favorite parts of 80's rock ballads. And no other voice could sing these songs: the timbre of the vocals always matches that of the song. They remind me of Tim Armstrong except, well, good. Sam's voice is versatile and led with a steady hand despite the feeling of it being unhinged and volatile. And finally, the members of this band are quite good instrumentalists. Like the voice, the playing is wild and loud but always contained enough to end up with a really good, crowd pleasing song. It all feels practiced, experienced, and professional. I don't want to spoil anything, but there's a double neck guitar in this session. You'll just have to see for yourself how they use it.
