A plot of land on the Berkeley campus made verdant by young area non-conformists became a virtual Viet Nam battlefield in May, 1969. Pitting the government against the unpredictable liberal-thinkers over a period of several days, armed police cordoned off the park, chased down violators and arrested en masse 482 protestors loosely organized in a protest march. Bail, set at $800 per, was unattainable for most, and this concert was held to help raise money. Bill Graham favorites the Grateful Dead and Santana could be counted on to pitch in.
