Super-hip cult favorites LOVE headlined this concert with rhythm guitar harmony rockers, Everpresent Fullness. Wilson's lettering suggests the convoluted love affair of LOVE fans and the saturation of Fullness.
The 1st printing is on vellum less than .008" thick, does not glow when placed under a black light and measures 13 15/16" x 20 3/16". The U and R in "Saturday" overlap and the A and U in "August" touch. There is a green dot in the B of "Bill" and a green slash in the T of "Tickets" that is not found in the reprints. The green ink was changed during this pre-concert press run so there is considerable variation from bright green to olive.
2nd printing A was printed after the concert on uncoated index .009" thick. The letters in Friday/Saturday/August are spaced farther apart with noticeable gaps between the A and U of "August" and the U and R of "Saturday". This version glows when placed under a black light and measures 13 3/4" x 20". It is on smoother stock, and the green and purple are darker than on the B printing.
2nd printing B is on plated stock .009" thick or thicker. This post-concert reprint shows the same letter spacing in Friday/Saturday/August as the 2nd printing A, but will not glow under a black light. The poster measures 13 7/8" x 20 1/8".
When the Avalon Ballroom and Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium began to hold weekly dance concerts, Wilson was called upon to design the posters. He created psychedelic posters from February 1966 to May 1967, when disputes over money severed his connection with Graham. Wilson pioneered the psychedelic rock poster. Intended for a particular audience, "one that was tuned in to the psychedelic experience," his art, and especially the exaggerated freehand lettering, emerged from Wilson's own involvement with that experience and the psychedelic art of light shows.
