Print Variations
The 1st printing is red, yellow, blue and black on white vellum and measures 13 3/4" x 20". "The Bindweed Press, San Francisco" appears in white lettering on the bottom left hand corner. Some of these 1st printings have a 3/8" right hand uncut white border, which we consider to be a Proof. It was printed before the concert.
Several versions of this pre-concert 1st printing exist which are missing one color or another; however these are generally considered anomalies and not variants.
The 2nd printing was printed on uncoated index after the concert and adds "No 39" to the lower right corner. It contains all four colors of the 1st printing and measures 13 15/16" x 20".
About Stanley Mouse
Born in Detroit, Stanley Miller became known as "Mouse" after illustrating countless notebooks with his signature rodent sketch. Miller found an outlet for his creativity in pin-striping cars and airbrushing hot rod designs on posters and T-shirts. Mouse migrated to San Francisco in 1964, where he first met the artists associated with Family Dog, the organization producing dance concerts at the Avalon Ballroom. With collaborator Alton Kelley, Mouse experimented broadly with composition, lettering and imagery: Kelley came up with the ideas and Mouse executed the designs. Mouse and Kelley helped to establish the psychedelic style of expression under the name Mouse Studios.
